One row per year, sorted ascending. nih / cordis are per-source {count, total} objects; combined_total = nih.total + cordis.total. topic is matched EXACTLY against primary_topic_name (no fuzzy resolution) - an unknown topic returns HTTP 200 with an empty list, never an error; verify the exact OpenAlex topic name. The default window is the last 5 years (startYear defaults to endYear - 4, endYear to the current year).
