topic is matched EXACTLY against primary_topic_name (no fuzzy resolution). An unknown topic name is not an error: the API returns HTTP 200 with all-zero totals (total_grants 0, nih/cordis count+total 0, combined_total 0) - verify the exact OpenAlex topic name before concluding no funding exists.
